As an associate here at 1910 PR and a member of Generation Z, I find it easier to create media and content tailored for our Gen Z audience. This generation is distinct from those that came before us; we grew up with phones in our hands and computers at our fingertips. This lifestyle has shaped how we use and consume media, making it crucial for creators to understand what sets us apart. Let’s explore some key aspects of this generation and how they influence the media we all consume.
Digital Natives: Born Online
Unlike previous generations, we have never known a time without the internet. Growing up with smartphones and social media means we have had information readily available. Gen Z is quite adept at navigating social media and modern technology. While Millennials witnessed the transition from traditional media to digital formats, Gen Z has been fully immersed in it from the start. Media aimed at Gen Z must be visually engaging, concise, and accessible across various platforms.
With information constantly streaming from TikTok, X, YouTube, and Instagram, it’s no surprise that attention spans are shrinking. Therefore, when targeting a Gen Z audience, creating bite-sized videos, infographics, and dynamic images with quick messages is essential.
Authenticity is Everything
One significant difference between this generation and those before is our demand for transparency and authenticity. We value genuine content, and companies that share their values resonate with us. This insight is invaluable for us at 1910 PR because we understand that sharing the stories behind events or providing behind-the-scenes glimpses will engage our audience. When creating media, reflecting on personal or company values will help foster connections
The Right Platforms
While older generations remain loyal to classic platforms like Facebook and Twitter (now X), Gen Z gravitates toward visually driven platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. When creating media, ensure it is visually appealing and accessible on social media. The visual aspect is a critical component of any content aimed at this generation.
Engagement is Key
Gen Z is highly interactive and engaging when they encounter content they love. Incorporating interactive elements such as polls, quizzes, or challenges encourages participation and connection. More than anything, Gen Z seeks connection. While it may not be the same as in-person interactions, building connections with audiences is still vital. Engaging in comments can significantly enhance those relationships.
Conclusion
Gen Z requires special attention, especially when creating content for us. Understanding our values and habits can enhance the creation process and produce content that resonates. Authenticity, visual appeal, and engagement can forge meaningful connections with Gen Z. As we continue to grow, we are shaping the status quo and the media landscape around us. Embracing these changes will help media thrive and be embraced by a broader audience.
