Taking a Chance

by Karree Belmares

Going into this semester I had no idea what to expect, the only thing that I was sure of was that I felt inadequate being a part of a PR firm. I have never been one for being involved with public relations, so of course I was nervous but I quickly learned that this experience was going to help me grow in many ways.

In being in 1910 PR I got hands on learning experience when it came to working with clients within the community and surrounding communities of Canyon. Being able to get a taste of what it is like to work with a team can be eye opening. I was used to only relying on myself to get tasks done in other classes, but this course teaches you that you have to have trust, patients, and willingness to get the job done together. I quickly learned that having experience working with others on projects all semester is a great lesson.

As we progressed farther into the semester, events and assignments began to increase and so did my stress level, but this taught me that in my career in the future I will have to juggle more than one task. This was only helping mature me and inform me that I am capable of getting the job done no matter how stressful it may be.

In this class I became familiar with certain programs like Adobe Express, Canva, and Slack. I have never been confident in using sites like these because I always felt that my design skills weren't the best. This class taught me that designing graphics takes time and anyone is capable of creating something. I needed to allow myself to gain the experience of creating, rather than assuming I would be awful. I am happy that I took a chance in enrolling in this class. I have learned skills that I will carry with me and into my career and I have even learned valuable life lessons.
