Looking back to the start of the semester, roughly 90 days ago, I was just stepping into my last first day of classes at WT. One of the classes I had to take was Dr. Kinksy’s 1910 PR class.

Starting this class, I had no real idea of what I was supposed to do or what would be expected of me over the next four months.

Now I am wrapping up my time as a WT undergrad student reflecting on my time.

As time went on I never really stopped to think about all the experience I was gaining until I sat down to write my reflection on my time in the course.

This class has been like no other I have taken during the past three years.

In other classes I have taken, I go to class, listen to the lecture and take notes for an hour and fifteen minutes. Then do this each day over, and over again. Until it's time for a test, where I have to sit in the class after retaining hours of knowledge and many long nights of studying, to perform well on the test. 1910 PR is not like that. At all, in fact.

1910 is hands-on, personal, it allows us as students to get a real feel of working for a client.

As a senior that graduates in 27 days, at the time of writing this, I can confidently say I feel so much more prepared to cross that stage knowing I learned life-long skills and tactics to be successful in whatever career I fall into.

Working with the English, Philosophy, and Modern Languages department I have been able to create purposeful content that aligns directly with the brand voice and goals of the client. Concepts such as audience engagement and content strategy became much more real once I had to apply them to actual situations.

One of the biggest things I learned through my time in 1910 PR is social media, and how important it is to pay attention to the little details, an average person might not think about.

Time of day posting, data gathering, and captions all can impact how a post does for your client. In the beginning I was not as confident with posting and making content for the client, but now I feel like I have a better understanding of all the ins and outs to creating a post.

Learning how to create and structure meaningful content has helped me feel better prepared for any real world communication roles I might have.

Overall, 1910 PR opened up many new opportunities and practical experience that I might not have had otherwise. I feel better prepared for whatever life might throw my way after having taken this course.

If you are required to take this class, don’t view it as a class you have to take, but one you get to take. Many students won’t ever get the opportunity to be on the 1910 PR staff. This course challenged me, made me think critically, and solve problems, adapt to feedback and critiques, all of which will help me far beyond the walls of WTAMU.

So my advice for anyone, whether you’re a freshman about to take a big step and walk into the doors of WT for the first time unsure of what to expect, or a first semester senior, who’s just counting down to graduation, take 1910 PR. You will be glad you did.
